Our vision and goals
Background
The establishment of the ELC was one of the key recommendations of the Electronics Innovation and Growth Team’s Report. Its role was to oversee the implementation of all the EIGT recommendations and initiate workstreams to tackle some of the strategic problems identified in the report. Through the ELC’s leadership a clear strategy is being implemented to take these forward but there remains a need for a high level strategic voice for the sector which is able to articulate the challenges facing our sector, can develop appropriate responses and has credibility and influence with those responsible for delivery and within the industry itself. This means we must work closely with BERR in its role as the “voice for business” in Government to refine strategic priorities, establish timescales and goals and create the conditions for business success in the UK. We must also maintain a good working relationship with DIUS and other Government agencies or departments.
Mission Statement
The ELC will take a clear and visible leadership role to steer the UK electronics industry towards greater innovation and creativity, international growth and sustainable profitability. We will provide a vision for the sector, identify national priorities on the key issues facing the industry and set strategic policy objectives.
We must articulate these outputs to all stakeholders and delivery agents throughout the entire electronics sector, including the Technology Strategy Board, Commission for Employment and Skills, Regional Development Agencies and devolved administrations and trade associations, as well as government.
As our strategy evolves we should exploit key opportunities to promote and champion publicly our industry with the intention of:
1) Elevating the industry within Government to one that is strategically vital to our future economic growth and our social and environmental wellbeing and influencing Government policy to benefit the industry and as a result the UK economy and society as a whole. The ELC must influence Government policy across a range of Departments and develop and maintain good communications with the relevant Ministers.
2) Encouraging greater innovation and creativity throughout the industry and facilitating access to technologies from within academic institutions and throughout the industry to the benefit of the sector.
3) Appealing to high calibre young people as an industry within which they should wish to develop their careers and ensuring our sector has the skills it needs to compete effectively in global markets.
4) Developing high level communications with the entire industry to highlight success stories and encourage greater risk sharing not only within the industry but also within the financial communities
5) Adding value to broader initiatives in the engineering and manufacturing sectors, including in supply chain management, public procurement and business processes improvement.
6) Representing the electronics industry to the Technology Strategy Board, Office of Government Commerce and other relevant groups .
7) Work with the UK Electronics Alliance to give solid representation of the entire electronics industry by pulling together all the strands that compose it.
Our overall objective is to contribute to the creation of a vibrant, creative, dynamic, growing and profitable UK electronics industry that is capable of punching its weight on the world stage. By encouraging Government, focusing BERR, influencing DIUS and grabbing the attention of the industry, we can make a visible and lasting difference
The Strategic Plan will be reviewed and amended as the Council sees fit but the actions resulting from it will be carried out through the UKEA, EKTN and other active, funded agencies. The ELC will monitor the progress made and will take a guiding role with the primary goal of being a positive force for good within the electronics and technology industries.
